What is BugJar?

A 5-minute orientation. What problem BugJar solves, how it works, when to use it, and when not to.

A consent-gated bug-reporting tool for B2B SaaS.

The problem

Your customer hits a bug. Two paths:

Path A — they file a vague support ticket. "The thing is broken." Your team can't reproduce. The ticket sits in a queue while engineering tries to figure out what they meant.

Path B — you've installed an always-on session-replay tool (FullStory, LogRocket, Hotjar). You search through their session, scrub through it, find the moment things broke. Bug fixed faster, but every customer's session is now stored on someone else's servers in case you needed it. Most you'll never look at.

Both paths trade off. Path A wastes engineering time. Path B trades customer privacy for engineering convenience.

The BugJar path

The user clicks a Record button on your site. They reproduce the bug, narrate, draw on the page. They review what's about to be sent — sensitive data redacted in their browser. They click Send.

Your engineer gets a 90-second replay synced to audio, console, network. The same context Path B gives — but only for the bugs that actually got reported, only when the user consented, only with sensitive data masked before it left their browser.

You don't store sessions you'll never watch. Customers don't have to trust you with capture-everything observability.

When to use BugJar

  • Your customers can articulate "this thing is broken" — they're not lost in the UX, they're frustrated by a specific bug.
  • Your security/legal team has flagged session-replay tools as a privacy concern.
  • You serve regulated industries (fintech, legal-tech, HR-tech) where always-on capture creates compliance exposure.
  • Your engineers are tired of unreproducible bug reports and want richer context.

When NOT to use BugJar

  • You need always-on observation across thousands of daily users (analytics, conversion-rate optimization). That's session-replay's job — pick FullStory/LogRocket.
  • Your customers are non-technical and can't operate a Record-narrate-send flow on their own.
  • You need heatmaps, scroll-tracking, or surveys. That's Hotjar's job.
